2026 Honda Prelude: The Icon, Hybrid Version

There are some names that still resonate years after they were last introduced. For many enthusiasts, one of those names is "Prelude." Residents of Terrebonne and Repentigny remember how iconic the Honda Prelude was in its time. It's one of those cars that defined a generation.

And now, a new chapter begins this year with the model's return. The Prelude is back at dealerships, and for this sixth generation, it returns with a hybrid powertrain, a platform borrowing elements from the Civic Type R, and entirely new driving technology.

This isn't just a simple resurrection. Honda designed this new Prelude for drivers who want to experience something different every day, without sacrificing efficiency. The 2026 Prelude is made in Japan and promises to appeal to enthusiasts: it's a limited-production vehicle aimed at a specific buyer segment.

A High-Performance Hybrid Powertrain

Under the hood of the 2026 Prelude is Honda's two-electric hybrid system, the same one that powers the Civic Hybrid, winner of the 2025 North American Car of the Year award. This 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine works in tandem with two electric motors to produce a combined output of 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. The result is brisk, responsive acceleration that's significantly more engaging than the numbers suggest.

What truly sets this version apart is Honda's S+ Shift technology, a new driving mode that simulates the shifts of a performance-oriented manual transmission. Thanks to the paddle shifters, the system synchronizes engine speeds and creates shift responses that make every trip on Highway 25 or Route 640 much more dynamic.

Key mechanical features:

200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque (combined output)

Fourth-generation dual-electric hybrid system

Honda S+ Shift mode with paddle shifters and rev-lock control

Four driving modes: Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual

The Civic Type R platform

For the first time in Honda's history, a hybrid model inherits chassis components from the legendary Civic Type R. The pivoting front suspension, wider front and rear tracks, four-piston Brembo brakes, and adaptive dampers have been carried over and specifically tuned for the Prelude. The philosophy is that of a grand tourer: precise and engaging in sporty driving, yet comfortable for everyday commuting. The 19-inch Black Berlina wheels, fitted with 235/40R19 tires, accentuate the coupe's sporty, low stance. The 13.8-inch front brake discs, shared with the Civic Type R, provide stopping power to match the vehicle's performance.

A Japanese-designed car

The 2026 Prelude's silhouette is unlike anything else in the Honda lineup. Its double-bubble roof, flared fenders, wing-shaped daytime running lights, and full-width taillights create a muscular yet fluid profile. Flush door handles, an antenna integrated into the glass, and laser brazing along the roofline demonstrate the meticulous attention to detail.

The Prelude is available in three colors in Canada: Winter Frost Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, and Rally Red. Inside, the driver-oriented dashboard features a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with built-in Google, wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system.

Standard Honda Sensing Safety

As with all current Honda models, the Honda Sensing suite of safety features comes standard on the 2026 Prelude. It includes forward collision warning, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and traffic jam assist. Whether cruising on Highway 640 or on long drives to the Laurentians, these technologies work in the background to reduce driver alertness without ever intruding.

A Limited Edition

The 2026 Prelude will be offered in a single, very well-equipped trim level. Its availability in Canada is extremely limited, making it one of the most anticipated vehicles of the year. If the Prelude holds fond memories of your youth, or if you're simply curious to see what Honda can do with a hybrid sports coupe, now's the time to find out.
